Peter Stephens
Artist
Adelaide, South Australia, 1948.
I am an amateur artist [French, from Latin amātor, lover, from amāre, to love.] On the day, I am looking and working attentively, and all the qualities of the scene, are transposed directly to the canvas. Depicted as best I can, are the light, colours, forms, and the clouds, of the day. I do not think of it as an image or as self expression. The art is to be seriously, watching, listening, and working co-operatively with the features, the medium and the tools, whether it is paint, clay, photos or words. I don't intend for the painting to be a result mediated by style, technique, or concept. For me, it is a days outing with the landscape and with painting. I am not in business and not working to be a success.
