How to make a handle
for a mug or teapot.

1.
最初、粘土はきくもみをします。
First, wedge the clay.

いっぺんの粘土を取ります。
Take a piece of clay.

そして、粘土は手で巻きます。
Then roll the clay by hand.

4.
それを手で前に持ちます。
Hold it in front of you in your hand.

5.
濡れた手でそっと粘土を引き下げます。
With wet hands, gently pull the clay down.

そして濡れた手で粘土を絞って引き下げます。
Then squeeze the clay with wet hands and pull down.

粘土を薄く細くしていきます。
Make the clay thinner and narrower.

8.
粘土は垂れ下がるようにします。
Let the clay hang down.

途中から、底の部分を引き下げます。
From the middle, pull down the bottom part.

そして、取っての形を作り始めます。
Now start shaping the handle.

ゆびで粘土をそっと絞って取っ手を形作り始めます。
Gently squeeze the clay with the fingers and begin to form the shape of the handle.

慎重に絞って繰り返し引き下げます。
Carefully, squeeze and pull down repeatedly.

形と長さを確認します。
Check the shape and length.

指で、粘土から取っ手を摘み取る準備をします。
With your fingers, prepare to pinch off the handle from the clay.

取っ手の上部の厚い部分を保ちます。
Keep a thick part at the top of the handle.

粘土から指で取っ手を摘み取ります。
Pinch the handle off of the clay with your fingers.

13.
アーチ形のままで板に置きます。
Place it on the board in an arched shape.

少し乾かします。
Let it dry a little.

次の段階の準備はいいですか。Ready for next step？

マグカップと取っ手が半乾きのとき、取っ手を付けます。
When the mug and handle are half dry attach the handle.

16.
取っての上端を切り落とします。
Trim the top end of the handle.

上端の太い部分を残します。
Leave a thick bit at the top end.

17.
取っ手をつけたいところで焼き物を濡らします。
Where you want to attach the handle, wet the pottery.

ブラシでマグカップに泥獎を少し作ります。
With a brush, make some slip on the mug.

取っ手の上端に泥獎を少し作ります。
Make some slip at the top of the handle.

19.
取っ手の上端をマグカップに押し付けます。Press the top of the handle onto the mug.
取ってを位置までくねくねと動かします。 Wiggle the handle into position.
取っ手の太い上端をマグカップに押し付けます。Press the thick end onto the mug.
以前のように、濡れた手で粘土を絞って引き下げます。As before, with wet hands, squeeze the clay and pull down.
必要だったら取っ手を薄く作ります。Make the handle thinner if necessary.        
もう一度、取っ手の形を作ります。 Once again, shape the handle.

20.
取っ手は垂れ下がるようにします。
Let the handle hang down.

取っ手の位置を確認します。
Check the position of the handle.

21.
取っ手をアーチ型にして、下部分を付けます。
Arch the handle and attach the bottom part.
